After an amazing trip through South Africa, we took a short flight from Cape Town to Victoria Falls Airport for the final part of you honeymoon. read more about our trip in South Africa part 1 and South Africa part 2.
We ended our holiday in the historic The Victoria Falls Hotel. This iconic hotel was built in 1904 and belongs to The Leading Hotels of the World. The hotel is excellent, but the location is really top of the bill. From here you have a fantastic view of the Victoria Falls. The best time to visit is from December to March because the water volume is greatest then. Before we left I imagined it to be like Niagara, but nothing is less true. Niagara is a small funfair, right in town but Vic Falls is surrounded by nature. With a width of 1,708m it is the widest waterfall in the world. 500 million liters of water pours over the edge. The waterfall is situated in the Zambezi River on the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia and is on the Unesco World Heritage list.
The first white man who saw the waterfall was Dr. Livingstone. He named the falls after Queen Victoria, UK’s queen at that time. The locals call the falls Mosi-oa-Tunya (the smoke that thunders).
The walk along the falls is really fantastic. I could have spent hours enjoying the view.
Want to see the falls from a different perspective, book a rafting trip on the Zambezi. Looking for an adrenaline rush? Book a bungee jump from the Victoria Falls bridge. At the time this was, with 111 meters, the highest jump in the world. Meanwhile, there are much higher jumps possible, but the location remains ,in my opinion, unbeatable. My husband booked a jump, but found it very frightening when he stood on the platform. When it was clear that he got his money back if he didn’t jump, the decision was quickly made. So although he didn't jump, it's not on his bucket list any longer.
At the Victoria Falls railway station you can book a train ride with an old locomotive that brings you into Zambia. Taka a view at the falls from the other shore.
After 3 weeks an amazing honeymoon came to an end. We are still in love with each other and with South Africa.
