During our search for a hotel in Bangkok, our eye immediately fell on the charming boutique hotel Chakrabongse Villas. We were looking for a quiet place to escape the hustle and bustle of busy Bangkok and this seemed to be the perfect place.
Chakrabongse was built in 1908 as a sanctuary for the Thai prince Chakrabongse. Today it is the property of his granddaughter Princess Narisa who herself lives in the main building. She apparently goes regularly among the guests, without revealing who she is.
Suites
Scattered by the beautiful tropical garden are 7 luxurious suites. We stayed in the Chinese suite, which is perfect for families. It consists of a large living room with a bedroom and bathroom on the ground floor and a second bedroom and bathroom on the first floor. The suite is fully furnished in Chinese style with the four-poster bed on the first floor as masterpiece. There is a large terrace with sunbeds upstairs and downstairs.
The Chinese suite is hidden behind a number of gigantic plants that gives you complete privacy. The cozy swimming pool is right in front of the suite.
The other rooms are decorated in Thai style. Personally, I would not choose the suite that overviews the river. You will of course enjoy an enchanting view, but you have to take the noise from the passing boats (and the activity goes on day and night).
Food
The restaurant is located in an outdoor pavilion on the banks of the river. During breakfast you will witness the vibrant life in Bangkok. One boat after another passes by. In the evening you can enjoy the view of the atmospheric illuminated Wat Arun.
Since it is a very small hotel, there is no buffet in the morning. Every morning you have to fill out a form to order your breakfast fort he next day. A delicious Thai rice soup with shrimp, pork or chicken (highly recommended) or rather an egg? Poached, boiled, scrambled eggs, ... it's all possible. They also have delicious, warm croissants, fresh fruit, fresh fruit juice, .... All prepared à la minute.
In the evening you can enjoy an exquisite dinner. Reservation is required.
Location
The location of the hotel is really great. In the middle of the old town, on the banks of the Chao Phraya river. From the pavilion where they serve breakfast and dinner, you can enjoy a fantastic view over the river and Wat Arun temple across the water. Wat Arun is one of the highlights of Bangkok and in the evening the view is mesmerizing.
When you step out of the gate, you can walk to the famous Wat Pho temple and the royal palace in a few minutes.
Moreover, you will find plenty of cozy street food stalls at walking distance where they serve the most delicious dishes. Within 5 minutes you will be on the ferry which will take you to the other side of the river for only 10 cents.
The hotel has its own speed boat and longtail boat. Both can be rented for excursions.
If you are looking for an exclusive stay where you can relax after abusy day in Bangkok, Chakrabongse Villas is the place to be.
